Flying diary

16 October 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There was no flying last weekend.

This weekend currently looks marginal for tomorrow (Saturday) but definitely flyable on Sunday

09 October 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
A number of people were out flying last Sunday. The sky looked better than it actually turned out to be, with lots of sink around, but a couple of us managed to get to cloudbase (4600').

This weekend currently looks blown out on Sunday and may be too windy tomorrow, check later today.

02 October 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
Last Sunday turned out to be a good day with large smooth thermals, some good flights and at least one XC.

This weekend is blown out tomorrow but might be flyable on Sunday.

25 September 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There have been a couple of good days flying over the past week. Last Sunday turned out to be good with a number of people have a play for a couple of hours and Andy H flying to his home (he must have a big back garden...). Yesterday also turned out to be good - with everyone apparently having good flights and Andy H managing a triangle. September may be the best month of the year!

This weekend looks flyable both days with the best day looking to be tomorrow (Saturday). Light winds and 400fpm thermals are likely although the top of the thermals may only be around 2500'.

23 Septemper 2009  -  Steve Wood
We may be flying mid week - Tomorrow Thursday 24 Spetember 2009.
The weather looks thermic with a high cloud base for the time of year - possibly the last of the season. If interested please call, text, or email me and I shall confirm plans with Roger Wednesday night.

19 September 2009  -  Richard Murphy
We will be flying on sunday. It's expected to be post frontal and thermic. We will be keeping an eye out on the wind. I recommend grabbing the opportunity before the weather takes a nose dive.

18 September 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
Last Saturday proved to be a pleasant days flying with blue sky thermals. A 5-10mph wind and an inversion layer at 3400' stopped anyone from trying triangles or O/Rs but a few of us has an hour or two working the blue thermals.

11 September 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There was no flying last weekend or during the week - winds were too strong.

We will be flying tomorrow (Saturday). Winds are North Easterly and hopefully thermic. Goal will be Lands End...:-)

03 September 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There was no flying last weekend due to the wind.

This weekend looks like it is going the same way unless the forecast changes.

28 August 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
Last Saturday saw a lot of people out, three people (Steve Wood, Paul Smith and Andy Chamberlaine) for the first time this year! The sky looked very good but for about 3 hours it actually turned out to be unusable within 3 miles of the field. People needed to be towed to working clouds well away from the field to avoid just sinking out. Very strange. The Met office satellite pictures for the day showed a sustained blue hole in our area running for about 50 miles SW/NE for 3 hours. The streets either side were working well with 600-800fpm under some clouds but also large areas of sink if you got caught out.

Tomorrow (Saturday) is currently looking slightly too windy. Sunday may prove flyable although it is lookig marginal at present. Monday is currently looking blown out. Just what you need for an August Bank holiday...

20 August 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There was no flying last weekend.

This weekend looks flyable for Saturday and could be good for XCs. Sunday looks blown out at present.

14 August 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
We flew both days last weekend and had a very nice barbeque on the Saturday night. Conditions on Saturday were excellent for some, with Richard Murphy getting to Peterborough and back, and Tony Smith and yours truly doing triangles. Winds were very light and base ended up at 5800' with 600-800fpm near to base but tough conditions if you got too low from mid-afternoon onwards. Sunday conditions did not get going until mid-afternoon but Jason then managed two legs of a triangle in the increasing wind.

31 July 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
We were out last Saturday but unfortunately a pilot had an accident at the start of flying and had to be taken to hospital with a dislocated shoulder (he's on the mend now). Those of us who eventually flew found the conditions a bit scrappy, highlighted when a sailplane from Tibenham made an emergency landing at the field after running out of lift.

24 July 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There was no flying last weekend.

This weekend currently looks flyable on Saturday. Sunday currently looks blown out.

15 July 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There was no flying last weekend.

This weekend currently looks blown out, unless the forecast changes significantly.

10 July 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
We flew last Saturday with most people getting into the air before 12.30 due to the forecast shut-down in thermic conditions which duly arrived around 14.30. Some people had some good flights before that and Andy managed a small O/R.

02 July 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There was no flying last weekend. Thunderstorms on Saturday would have upset the flying and the forecast for Sunday persuaded people to do something else. In practice it apparently was flyable on Sunday with light winds and a decent base.....

This weekend currently looks best for Saturday with RASP suggesting it could be good, a ridge of high pressure, southerly winds, high c-base and decent thermals.

26 June 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
Last Sunday turned out to be surprisingly good once the early cloud cover departed around 12.00. By 13.30 the ground was cooking and we had about 3 hours of usable thermic activity with some really good "playing" as up to 5 of us were sharing thermals at times. Thermal strength versus wind strength made it difficult to do anything but open distance but Tony Smith at least managed a small triangle when the streets lined up the right way for him.

19 June 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
Last Sunday turned out to have some really good conditions. The wind was light enough for triangles and O/Rs but strong enough to make them challenging. The thermals were working from early on and really got going strongly (600-800'fpm could be had if you could find it) from mid afternoon onwards with base going from under 4000' at 12.00 to 5800' at 17.00. Andy got away at 11.30 to attempt a big triangle but had to land out after the first turnpoint when a couple of clouds in succession did not prove to be working - the conditions were tricky at times. I managed a smaller triangle but wimped out on a bigger one after a couple of low saves when some clouds proved not to be working. We had a good crew out and most people had some good fun flights with a couple getting up to base.

12 June 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There was no flying last weekend. We will be flying this Sunday.

05 June 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There was no flying last weekend - the wind was too strong on the field. A few people went to the coast where apparently the wind was not strong enough!

Saturday is probably the best day this coming weekend, particularly as we have the club AGM in the evening in Sutton.

19 May 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
A small number of us were out last Saturday and had an hour or so each but the wind strength/thermal strength ratio didn't allow us to do O/Rs or triangles, and overdevelopment eventually killed the lift. Sunday was probably a better day but too many people were away on family business or injured so we did not manage to get a crew out.

20 May 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
The forecast for this coming weekend has changed significantly and is starting to look possible. Roger is OK for Saturday and/or Sunday.

15 May 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
Last Sunday turned out to be a good day with Andy H doing two O/Rs and Rainer getting his first 2000' height gain.

08 May 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There was some good (but cold) flying last Saturday. Wilson was up at 5500' playing with his Atos, Charlie Goodall, Graham, George and Richard all got into the air as well.

This weekend is looking good for Sunday with light winds currently forecast. I will be away this weekend so it's bound to be good.

30 April 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
Last Sunday had some excellent thermals, but some heavy sink (sustained 12 down in places) and a 10mph SE drift at cloudbase. Richard Murphy managed to get to Peterborough and Andy Hollidge landed near the A14/A1 junction while trying for an O/R. The rest of us had a play around nearer the field. The field seabreezed at 18.00 from the south east with a sudden strengthening of the SE wind at ground level, which is most unusual - the satellite pictures showed the whole of SE Anglia seabreezed in a triangle from GT Yarmouth to Colchester and up to the field at 18.00, a bit like Neville's pictures in this month's skywings.

23 April 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
We didn't actually get flying last Sunday. Too windy and gusty until around 15.00 by which time it had gone blue and the small crew had mentally given up and gone to work on repairing the club caravan roof.

17 April 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
The Easter weather finally stopped being miserable on Monday and a small crew got out to fly with flying starting at 15.00 after initial concerns with the "post-engine-maintenance" of the tug were addressed.

11 April 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
Last Sunday turned out to be another great day. We started Paul Whatley on his aerotow rating and by the end of the day after it had calmed down a bit he'd managed to get a decent tow up to 1000' - nice one! Although there was some heavy sink found by some, there was also some strong lift and by the end of the day base was at 5300'. Andy managed to do a big O/R (or was it a triangle?) and I managed an O/R to the A14 and back to Sutton village - an attempt to stretch to a triangle failed when I hit solid 1000 fpm down for 2 minutes and couldn't find a way out of it. Nick Cresswell, Richard Murphy, Bryan Youngs and Graham Bayliss also were out and had decent flights.

The tug engine is back from its service and Roger and George have installed it in the tug. They have about 3 hours more work to do to get everything sorted to make it flyable, either today or tomorrow morning.

30 March 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
Yesterday turned out to be a really good day with powerful (800fmp) thermal cores, some streets, and powerful (1000fpm) sink. It was also extremely cold with both Neville Almond and myself taking over 30 minutes to warm up again sufficiently to move and think once we got back to the field.

27 March 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
We had a good day's flying last Saturday with the forecast turning out to be pretty accurate, the main blue sky thermic activity being from about 11.30 to 14.30 but gentle lift carrying on for another hour or so. Andy showed us all how to stay up over the field for a couple of hours and I joined him for an hour, both of us peaking out at about 3600' - unfortunately the thermal/wind strength ratio was not quite in favour of O/Rs, even for Andy. Spyros also had a good flight, staying up for the best part of an hour. A few others unfortunately managed to find the heavy sink between thermals including Charlie Goodall who was out for the first time this year, and Nick Cresswell managed to extend his keel so he could launch off the trolley!

19 March 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
A good day was had by the small number of people who managed to get out and fly last Sunday. Wilson and Spyros each had about 45 minutes in the gentle lift about 2000' with base around 3800'.

For this weekend Saturday is currently looking the better day, Sunday may get too windy.

12 March 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
There was no flying last weekend.
The forecast for this weekend has been changing over the past few days but it is starting to look like Sunday will be flyable.

27 February 2009  -  Charlie Richardson
Last Saturday we flew for the first time this year. It was a really nice winters day with a good 10mph Westerly to help the landings and take-offs and even a little bit of wave lift to be found if you searched hard enough (0-1 up). Six of us were out stretching our wings.
